iVBook

iVBook is a text or ebook reader for Japanese encoded ascii document files.
I developed this on iPhone 1.1.2, but it should work on iPod touch and iPhone.
As you see below, iVBook supports only the vertical reading mode!

This is the view where you can choose a document from your list of '.txt' files.

I updated iVBook to show many characters to be looked OK in vertical reading mode. Also 'Ruby' in Aozora Bunko format can be hidden. I'll released the next version in a couple of days.

Versions:

  • 03/20/2009 Sent out 1.98 beta 1 to beta testers.
  • 12/29/2008 I started writing the manual for 1.97.
  • 12/23/2008 It seems pepole don't like the way iVBook decides the Rubi font size. I'm going to add the option to specify Rubi font size in the version after the next, but it will be delayed until the next year. I'm going to travel down South, and spend a couple of days in San Diego. I'm not able to respond e-mails for a while.
  • 12/21/2008 I've fixed the issue of opening the last read document. I'll test the code, and submit it to Apple today.
  • 12/19/2008 Version 1.95 has been disted. You can find the Japanese document here. iVBook 1.95 Manual
  • 12/14/2008 I've added a lot of updates in the version 1.95, and it's been commited to Apple. The big things are here.
    • Drawing small rubi is supported
    • Added built in data transfering
    • Text files are organized in sections by the folders where they are.
  • 12/03/2008 I created the GUI for the content view from scrach. The new GUI is more like iPhone appications. The new release should be available in a couple of days. After that I'm going to change iVBook a lot, and it may take a while to finish the modification.
  • 11/27/2008: Version 1.92 I fixed the issue of not saving the last viewd page number.
  • 11/26/2008: Version 1.91 has been submitted to App Store. The new one has a lot of new features. One of the submitted ones is distributed freely, please try it and see how it works. I think it'll take a couple of days before the 1.91 will be available from Apple. Also I uploaded a binary for jailbreaking users here. http://www.4shared.com/file/73278251/597fd4b8/iVBookJB-191.html The number of documents is limited in this version, and you can see only 5 items at same time.

There are a lot of options to customizing this reader application. Font Size, horizontal space size, vertical document size, hiding Rubi, hiding status bar, auto hiding status and navigation bars, view animation duration, background color, text color and automatically open the last document.
Also there are 5 ways of navigating pages.

    - Jumping to a page with the slider bar which appears by a two finger tap.
    - By tapping the left or right edges. You can turn on/off this feature in the preference view.
    - Using accelerometer. You can turn on/off and change the threshold in the preference view.
    - Dragging the page sheet.
    - Snapping

There are some more unique features.
    - You can organize text documents by moving finished ones to 'Finished Books'.
    - Changing pages are smoothly animated.
    - The bookmarks of all documents are saved.

  • 11/25/2008 : Version 1.90(for JB): two finger tap will pop up the page selector. the binary has lots of books written by Ryunosuke Akutagawa.
  • 2/21/2008 : Version 1.5
  • 2/15/2008 : Version 1.4
    • fixed the black out issue of the content screen.
    • added some more characters for vertical mode.
    • I tested on the latest 1.1.3, and iVBook is working fine. If you can't place bookmarks, try to open the permission of your EBook directory. --> chmod 777 /var/.../EBooks
  • 2/09/2008 : 1.3 has been disted. There are a couple of new features.
    • you can change text, background and paper color.
    • you can specify the directory where iVBook saves bookmarks. This is for 1.1.3, which I've not tried yet, and don't know if this solve issues on 1.1.3.
    • Animation. It's funcy but may crash your iPhone. If you have problems, try to kill Spring/SummerBoard, and see if it helps. If you'll have lots of crashes, please let me know.
    • Added some more characters to the conversion table.
    • Added support for '[#Kai-page]'
    • Tap and drag at the bottom of the screen allows you to browse pages.
    • When it starts, the last seen document will be loaded automatically.
  • 1/26/2008 : This is version 1.2. Just added icon image. That's it. ;-)
  • 1/21/2008 : updated a lot! The content view improved! 'Ruby' can be skipped from the setup menu.
  • 1/19/2008 : The initial version. To navigate the screen, do 'swipe'.

Install:

  1. make a dictionary called, 'iVBook.app' under /Applications.
  2. copy files in a downloaded zip file to the directory.
  3. change the permission of iVBook to 0755
  4. copy your .txt files to /var/root/Media/EBooks or somewhere.

Devlopment log...
  • 11/25/2008 Version 1.9. This works on FW 2.2. I don't know if it does for FW2.1, too.
  • 11/22/2008 I'm going to finish the first beta in a couple of days. It is going to be available for jailbroken iPhone/iPod Touch, but if your device is not jailbroken and try iVBook, let me know then I'll make ad-hoc signed binary for you. 'ad-hoc' binaries are code-signed for specific devices and anybody can install them. Anyway let me know any comments, requests or questions.
  • 11/21/2008 I've started the development of iVBook with iPhone SDK. There is nothing working yet, but I should have a beta(or alpha) in a coupe of days. Please let me know if you have any requests.
